Happy Easter from My Garden to Yours!

I wandered around the garden this morning to find the miniature Poinciana blooming! Also know as Mexican Bird of Paradise, Caesalpinia pulcherrima, is a tender but large shrub that will bloom from now until October. It grows to about 10 feet tall in my garden. This plant was given to me by friends, Jim and Sue, and does beautiful in poor soil and hot weather! (Of which, I have an abundance!) It grows easily from seed and may be a little bit aggresive for some people. I find that the sprouts are easily removed and that it is worth the extra "weeding".

I was looking around your blog and saw so many pretty flowers that I can't grow. I love this orange color and have decided to use a lot of orange and pink in my new gardens. Wish I could grow this one. If it's a fast grower, it might be worth looking at.

Hi Mary Beth,
We know this shrub as Caesalpinia pulcherrima, or Red Bird of Paradise. The Mexican Bird of Paradise is Caesalpinia mexicana, and its flowers are yellow, and resemble the Caesalpinia cacalaco, or Cascalote Tree. The Desert Bird of Paradise, Caesalpinia gilliesii, is yet another species and it has a different type of yellow flower than the Mexican Bird of Paradise.

Hi Mary Beth, the mini Cesalpinia is a shrub I always coveted and I also like the Jatropha very much. It is always a pleasure to have a stroll in your garden.

Aiyana - I missed that one! I'm new to learning the scientific names of the plants I love. Thanks for sharing the correct caesalpinea. Wrong name or not, it is a beauty!

Gardenjoy4me - How right you are, about how tough it is! It's delicate, tropical look is deceiving.

Anna - I had no idea how much I use orange in my garden until I started blogging. Its such a happy color!

Glad everyone liked the picture.

I would love to start one of these beauties!! I am putting that on my "list of plants to find a spot for"! Gorgeous color.

I was reading your comment about not knowing how much of one color (orange in your case) you use in a garden until you started blogging. I just started my blog (http://gettingdirtyintexas.blogspot.com) and have felt like it has been an opportunity to view my gardens and landscape from a new perspective. Very interesting.

Happy Planting!

Michelle, I'm trying to think if I have ever seen this in Central Texas - so please keep me posted as to where you find it and how it does. I enjoyed reading about your gardens development in "Getting Dirty in Texas". Thanks for linking to Cultivating Paradise!
